Mash up article

This comes as little surprise, yet it will present a challenge of sorts for the president. The bid to adopt a four-year-old girl from Malawi has been put on hold by the court. The pop star launched an appeal after her attempt to get legal custody of Mercy James was rejected, because the singer is not a resident of the African country. As the nation's first African-American president, Obama's relative youth his calls for reaching out to adversaries and friends overseas, his breaks from past policy, all seem to make the 47-year-old leader the best single antidote to anti-Americanism in years, maybe decades. Obama's appeal extends beyond just the leaders of the world. They claim to make it a dominant factor as she once said. “I also love it, of course,” she added, and the reason was typical of her approach. Madonna's lawyers argued residence is only a factor which is taken into account when the child's welfare and best interests are being considered. Everyone, no matter how poor, has to get dressed, and the way we think of ourselves, the way we compose ourselves every day, for me this is very powerful.” "What has happened is that anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore,” as Malawi's government was accused of giving Madonna special treatment when it allowed her to adopt David Banda in 2006.

Final model + explanation

Space for Nobel:
I have created an open plan space, consisting of an amalgamation of rectangles of different sizes. Each rectangular space is a representation of an idea or thought, whether they failed or were successful. As Nobel says, "If I have a thousand ideas and only one turns out to be good, I am satisfied.” With the rectangles as a maze, Nobel weaves his way through experiments with different ideas and processes, till he finally succeeds. If only one idea is sucessfull, he is satisfyed. The copious amount of rectangles represents this. The spaces are not enclosed but rather open to interpretation, improvement and criticism. The open space allows Nobel to expand his pysche. The rectangles are symbolic of Nobel’s scientific mind: complex, always looking for ways to improve and open to new experiments and ideas. In addition these spaces can be used for filing and storage of ideas and past experiments. The ramp was designed in a similar way, bound with rectangles of differing sizes and spaces.
Space for Cousteau:
I have created a space for Cousteau that considers the notion of gravity and transcending beyond the surface. As Cousteau says: “from birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free." It begins with an enclosed room, relatively small. The roof is textured with clouds to give the impression that Cousteau is deep underneath the surface, looking up at the sky. Then proceeding down a narrow flight of stairs, symbolic of the transition from the physical surface to the lack of gravitational force and freedom. Cousteau then comes out to the ramp in an open space, representing freedom. Cousteau “sinks beneath the surface” to embrace this freedom.
Meeting Space:
I have amalgamated the concepts behind Nobel and Cousteau’s spaces to create a space that would satisfy both needs. The space is deep, symbolic of gravity and its ability to pull one down beneath the surface. The collum’s are holding up the open roof that allows them to look up towards the sky, furthering this notion of being beneath the surface. The rectangles on the outskirts of the space are symbolic of Nobel’s successes and failures, ideas and processes. They can be used for storage of ideas and experiments.

Applied textures on model

Dark Texture:
I applied the dark shade to the meeting place space as it is enclosed and deeper, corresponding to a darker light. Furthermore, as the space is deep, the pattern creates a hypnotic motion when looking down on, drawing the eye to the centre of the space. Medium texture:
I applied this shade to Cousteau's space, as the motion of the pattern correlates to the motion of the ocean, one of Cousteau's focuses. Furthermore, when walking down the narrow stairs, it gives the impression of almost walking through the sea, till you reach the bottom, and encounter freedom as you have transcended the surface.
Light Texture:
I applied the light shade to the ceilings of the rectangles in Nobel's space. The lumosity of the white acts as a light for the space, highlighting the working areas amongst the jungle of ideas and thoughts that the rectangles represent. Moreover, I applied the light shade to the base of the ramp, guiding Nobel down the ramp and into the space.
